Specimen Processing:If CSF is bloody, centrifuge and aliquot 1 mL, 0.3 mL minimum supernatant prior to freezing sample . Store in freezer.

Interpretive

Reference Range:0.00 - 5.50 ng/mL
Use:Diagnosis of multiple sclerosis within 5 days of onset of neurologic symptoms. To determine whether an SM patient is having an active demyelinating episode. To determine whether active demyelination is occurring in patients being treated by intrathecal chemotherapy or radiation therapy for neoplastic diseases involving the central nervous system. To diagnose acute brain tissue destruction in children including newborns. To assess the efficacy of potential treatments for MS. Also see Oligoclonal Bands.

Hemolysis is associated with falsely elevated levels of MBP.
