Collection Instructions

Specimen:Feces
Optimal Volume:Submit entire collection; analysis requires a minimum of 10 grams
Collection Instructions:48, 72, or 96 hour specimen. Timed collection usually requires two containers.
Causes for Rejection:Barium and boric acid interferes with this test; less than 10 gm of feces.

Interpretive

Reference Range:16 years of age and older: 1.0-2.0 g/24 hours. A reference range for patients under 16 years of age has not been established by the reference laboratory.
Use:Assess protein balance when major N loss is in stool. Monitor chronic progressing pancreatitis.
