This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved or cleared this test; however FDA clearance or approval is not currently required for clinical use. The results are not intended to be used as the sole means for clinical diagnosis or patient management decisions.

Collection Instructions:Collect peak sample 2 hours post dose. Record the specific sulfonamide the patient is taking on the request form.
Causes for Rejection:Whole blood samples. Samples collected in gel tubes.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot within 2 hours of collection 1 mL, 0.5 mL minimum. Store refrigerated.

Reference Range:5.0-15.0 mg/dL Toxic: >20.0 mg/dL
Use:This test is designed to measure sulfamethoxazole and sulfisoxazole. Peak sulfonamide (total) blood levels of 5.0-15.0 mg/dL may be effective for most infections, with concentrations of 12.0-15.0 mg/dL being optimal for serious infections. Sulfonamide levels should not exceed 20.0 mg/dL. Adverse effects may include blood dyscrasias, skin rash, nausea, vomiting and fever.
