Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood

Collection Instructions:Collect peak sample 2 hours post dose. Record the specific sulfonamide the patient is taking on the request form.
Causes for Rejection:Whole blood samples. Samples collected in gel tubes.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot within 2 hours of collection 1 mL, 0.5 mL minimum. Store refrigerated.

Interpretive

Reference Range:5.0-15.0 mg/dL Toxic: >20.0 mg/dL
Use:This test is designed to measure sulfamethoxazole and sulfisoxazole. Peak sulfonamide (total) blood levels of 5.0-15.0 mg/dL may be effective for most infections, with concentrations of 12.0-15.0 mg/dL being optimal for serious infections. Sulfonamide levels should not exceed 20.0 mg/dL. Adverse effects may include blood dyscrasias, skin rash, nausea, vomiting and fever.
