Order Instructions:All renal samples should be sent to Pathology first for specimen processing.

Test Includes:Processing, routine staining and microscopic examination. Special stains immunohistochemical markers or electron microscopy will be added when indicated at additional charge.
Turnaround Time:Preliminary light microscopy results are reported in 1-2 days. IF and EM performed Mon-Fri, 0800-1530, reported within 7-10 days
Special Instructions:Provide clinical information, including renal function and transplant history, on request form.


Collection Instructions

Specimen:Renal tissue
Collection Instructions:Immediately place tissue into three containers: 1) for light microscopy, place into 10% formalin fixative; 2) for IF, place into Zeus Fixative; 3) for EM, place into 4:1 formaldehyde. Glutaraldehyde fixative available from the EM lab. Mark time placed in fixative on label of container. At FSH and FRH: Use 3 part kit available in Pathology Department; refer to department procedure for shipping instructions. For Consults: Collect in Glutaraldehyde (2.5%) fixative available from laboratory. Tissues routinely fixed in buffered formalin are suitable in selected instances. Contact Surgical Pathology at 612-273-3486 for collection procedure. At FSH and FRH: Use 3 part kit available in Pathology Department; refer to department procedure for shipping instructions.

Specimen Processing:Store at room temperature.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at room temperature. Must arrive within 24 hours.

Reference Range:Interpretive report.
Use:Evaluation of acute or chronic renal disease, transplant rejection or drug toxicity.
