Optimal Volume:2.5 mL

Container:Green (lithium heparin, gel) (Green (lithium heparin) on ICE, Green (sodium heparin, no gel), Green (sodium heparin, no gel) on ICE, Red (no gel), Red or gold (gel))
Collection Instructions:Some diurnal variation is observed, so a morning, fasting sample is preferred. Approximately half of serum calcium is bound to proteins; therefore, posture will produce variation in results.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot 1.25 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Refrigerate immediately and maintain anaerobically if sample will not be tested within 4 hours.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:Stability: Refrigerated - 7 days; frozen - 6 months.

Interpretive

Critical Range:

Less than 6.0 mg/dL and greater than 14.0 mg/dL

1 - 18 y 9.1-10.3
19 y and older 8.5-10.1
 GICH: All ages 8.6-10.3 mg/dL  
Limitations:Calcium added after 4 hours may be elevated by up to 0.4 mg/dL if the container is not refrigerated and maintained anaerobically.
Use:

When hypocalcemia or hypercalcemia is suspected, or to monitor treatment for calcemic disorder.
