Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:2.5 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.6 mL
Container:Green (lithium heparin, gel) (Green (lithium heparin) on ICE, Red (no gel), Red or gold (gel))
Patient Preparation:Please do not eat 10-12 hours before your appointment if you are coming in fasting for labs on lipids, cholesterol, or glucose (sugar). This does not apply to pregnant women.
Water, tea or black cofee (with nothing added) is okay. Do not drink other fluids, diet soda or chew gum.

Causes for Rejection:Specimen not separated from cells within 8 hours.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Separate serum/plasma from red cells within 2 hours of collection. Centrifuge and aliquot 1.25 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:Stability: Refrigerated - 7 days; frozen - 3 months.

Cholesterol  
0 - 19 y Less than 170 mg/dL
Borderline high: 170-199 mg/dL
High: Greater than or equal to 200 mg/dL
20 y and older Less than 200 mg/dL
 GICH: All ages less than 200 mg/dL  
Use:Evaluate lipid levels. Monitor lipid lowering therapy. New practice guidelines issued by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) are available at www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/cholesterol.index.htm.
