Test Includes:Culture for yeast and filamentous fungi. KOH preparation is available upon request on all specimen types except blood, bone marrow, CSF and urine.
Turnaround Time:Performed 24 hours/day; preliminary results are updated Mon-Fri. Negative finals are reported at 4 weeks.
Special Instructions:The same specimen may be submitted for bacterial and fungal culture, and KOH preparation. Indicate organism suspected or relevant clinical history on request form.

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Respiratory sources, tissue, pus, granules, corneal scraping, CSF or other body fluids. Blood/bone marrow specimens, see Blood Culture, Yeast/Fungal. Hair/nails/skin specimens, see Fungal Culture, Skin. Genital sources/urine, see Yeast Culture, Nonblood.
Optimal Volume:Visible material or 1 mL other body fluids. Swabs should be submitted only when specimen cannot be obtained.
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile (Syringe, sterile, no needle)


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.

Interpretive

Reference Range:No growth.
Use:Isolate and identify fungi in patients whose clinical situation places them at high risk for a fungal infection whether focal or disseminated.
