Susceptibility Test MIC

Sunquest Code:RESENS
Epic Code:LAB3712Epic Name:Referral Sensitivity
Order Instructions:Automatically ordered by IDDL on bacterial isolates per lab protocol.
Synonyms:Antibiotic Sensitivity Test with Interpretations (MIC); MIC Antibiotic Susceptibility
Methodology:Automated instrument, Microtiter panel, or Etest
CPT Code:----------CPTCODES HERE----------
Test Includes:Minimal inhibitory concentrations with interpretations.
Turnaround Time:Performed daily, 0730-1530; results are reported within 2 days dependent on the isolate.
Special Instructions:

The laboratory selects an appropriate battery of antibiotics to be tested depending on the isolate.

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Test performed on bacterial isolate
Causes for Rejection:Non-viable isolates.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Submit a fresh pure subculture of isolate on an agar plate or slant. Store at room temperature.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at room temperature. Must arrive within 24 hours.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Lab-Microbiology  (UMMC-East Bank)

Interpretive

Reference Range:See interpretive report.
Therapeutic Range:

Systemic Infections:  2-4 times the reported MIC should be equal to or less than the peak attainable blood level.

Urinary Infections:  10-20 times the reported MIC should be equal to or less than the peak attainable urine level.

Results are reported as MICs (minimum inhibitory concentrations) for most antibiotics.

Limitations:Results are reported as MICs (minimum inhibitory concentrations) for most antibiotics. The MICs are interpreted as: S=Susceptible: drug is probably effective at standard dosage. I= Intermediate: the MIC/achievable body fluid level relationship should be used to help select the most effective route and dose. R=Resistant: The drug is probably not effective in the blood by parenteral administration at a nontoxic dose.
Use:Determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of organism (aerobic, anaerobic, gram-positive, gram-negative, urine isolate, etc).
