Sunquest Code: | HSDNA | ||
Epic Code: | LAB4573 | Epic Name: | HSV 1 and 2 DNA by PCR |
Synonyms: | HSV by PCR; Herpes Simplex Virus by PCR; HSV Real-Time PCR, Qualitative
Methodology: | Polymerase chain reaction
Turnaround Time: | Performed three times each week, Mon-Fri; results are reported within 2-5 days.
Special Instructions: | Tissue specimens will be sent out for molecular HSV testing.
Compliance: | Analyte Specific Reagents are used in many laboratory tests necessary for standard medical care and generally do not require U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Fairview Laboratory Services. It has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This test is used for clinical purposes. It should not be regarded as investigational or for research. |

Collection Instructions
Specimen: | Blood, BAL and swab |
Optimal Volume: | 2 mL blood or BAL; swab in 1 mL BD Universal Transport Media |
Minimum\Peds Volume: | 1.2 mL blood; 0.5 mL BAL; or swab in 1 mL BD Universal Transport Media |
Container: | Purple (EDTA), BD Universal Transport Media (Plain syringe) |
Collection Instructions: |
Deliver to laboratory immediately. Specimen should be collected during acute phase of the disease as follows:
|
Causes for Rejection: | Feces and heparinized specimens, wound dressings |
Processing and Shipping
Specimen Processing: | Centrifuge and aliquot 1 mL, 0.5 mL minimum plasma/serum, bronchoalveolar lavage. Store in refrigerated or frozen. Use plastic storage container-no glass (will break on freezing). All swabs must be collected with flocked swab, refrigerate in 1 mL universal transport media (UTM). |
Shipping Instructions: | Ship serum/plasma or BAL refrigerated. Ship culturettes at refrigerated temperature. |
Test Performed at or Referral Lab | Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory (UMMC-East Bank) |
Interpretive
Reference Range: |
A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or Herpes simplex virus DNA concentrations below the level of detection by the assay.
|
||||
Use: | Detection of HSV DNA and the ability to distinguish between different HSV types can be important for prognosis or for monitoring treatment success. This test should not be used to screen for an exposure to herpes simplex virus or ordered on asymptomatic patients. |
