Test Includes:Culture for aerobic flora plus Haemophilus species. If Neisseria gonorrhoeae is suspected, a GC kit must be ordered from the Micro Lab; this includes media and the CO2 transport container.
Turnaround Time:Performed 24 hours/day. Results are reported within 3 days.

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Swab of conjunctiva, eye drainage
Container:CoPan Eswab with larger swab (CoPan Swab with smaller swab)
Collection Instructions:UMMC, FRH, FSH, FNH, FLH: Use CoPan Eswab FRMC: Use culturette swab Swab: Pass moistened swab two times over lower conjunctiva.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Send to lab immediately. If not possible, store at room temperature.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at room temperature. Must arrive within 24 hours.

Interpretive

Reference Range:No growth.
Use:Normal ocular flora may include: Corynebacterium species (diphtheroids); coagulase negative Staphylococcus; Neisseria species; Moraxella species; nonhemolytic streptococci. Abnormal ocular flora includes: Haemophilus influenzae; Streptococcus pneumoniae; Staphylococcus aureus; Bacillus species; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; Neisseria gonorrhoeae; some saprophytic fungi.
