Collection Instructions

Collection Instructions:Special handling required:
  1. Obtain chilled pyruvate collection tube and sterile graduated pipette from laboratory. Keep pyruvate tube on ice until needed.
  2. At bedside, immediately after CSF collection, use sterile graduated pipette and transfer exactly 1 mL of well mixed CSF into the pyruvate collection tube.
  3. Mix sample for 30 seconds by inverting 10-15 times and place on ice.
  4. Keep sample on ice and deliver to laboratory as soon as possible.
Patient Preparation:Patient should be at complete rest.
Causes for Rejection:CSF not immediately transferred to pyruvate collection tube. Room temperature specimens.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Special processing required. Processing must occur before the sample is transported between campuses/sites. Immediately centrifuge mixed specimen at 1500 x g (RCF) for 10 minutes Decant 2 mL; 1 mL minimum supernatant to an ARUP Standard Transport tube and freeze immediately.
Shipping Instructions:Ship on dry ice.

Interpretive

Reference Range:0.060 - 0.190 mmol/L
Limitations:If less than 1 mL of CSF is added to collection tube, pH of the supernatant will be too low for testing to be performed.
