Urine Collection Procedure

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Urine
Optimal Volume:Submit entire collection; analysis requires 1 mL
Container:3 L plastic jug (Plastic leakproof container, sterile)
Collection Instructions:24 hour or random urine collection. Specimen must be collected in a plastic container and should be refrigerated during collection. ARUP studies indicate that refrigeration of urine alone, during and after collection, preserves specimens adequately if tested within 14 days of collection.
Patient Preparation:Diet, medication and nutritional supplements may introduce interfering substance. Patients should be encouraged to discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals and non-essential over-the-counter medications (upon the advice of their physician). High concentrations of iodine may interfere with elemental testing. Abstinence from iodine-containing medications or contrast agents for at least 1 month prior to collecting specimens for elemental testing is recommended.
Causes for Rejection:Urine collected within 72 hours after administration of gadolinium (Gd) contrast media (may occur with MRI studies). Acid preserved urine. Samples not aliquoted into ARUP metal-free plastic vials.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Mix collection well. Aliquot 8 mL, 1 mL minimum into 2 ARUP blue top metal-free, plastic vials. Regular aliquot tubes will be rejected. Store in refrigerator. Record total volume and collection time interval on transport vial.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.

Interpretive

Reference Range:
Zinc, Urine 15-120 µg/dL
Zinc, Urine (24 hour) 150-1200 µg/d
Zinc, Urine (per gram of creatinine) 110.0-750.0 µg/gCRT)
Zinc is predominantly eliminated in the feces. Elevated urine zinc may suggest excessive zinc supplementation but should be interpreted with a corresponding serum zinc concentration.
Use:Decreased in severe zinc deficiency.
