Collection Instructions

Specimen:Transcutaneous bilirubin measurement through skin on infant's forehead
Collection Instructions:

 

1.        Turn on BiliChek meter.

2.        Install single use tip on BiliChek meter.

3.        Press and release the trigger. Press and release the trigger again to initiate calibration.

4.        Meter will display 005 indicating calibration was successful and ready for five measurements.

5.        Press and release the trigger to activate measurement.

6.        Gently press the tip to the infant’s forehead and hold until the display reads 004.

7.        Lift the meter from the infant’s forehead and repeat until all 5 measurements are completed.

8.        The transcutaneous bilirubin result will display on the screen.

 

 

Causes for Rejection:Infant greater than 20 days old.
Contraindications:Do not use on infants greater than 20 days. Avoid sites with bruising, birthmarks, hematomas, excessive hair or sites exposed to phototherapy.

Critical Range:

Less than 1 day

>8 mg/dL

1-2 days

>13 mg/dl

3 days – 6 months

>15 mg/dL

 

 

Reference Range:Refer to nomogram. Reference range depends on whether baby is premature or full-term and age in days. Breast-feeding is significantly associated with hyperbilirubinemia in the first three days of life.
