Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:1 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.2 mL (tuberculin syringe)
Container:Dry heparin syringe (Capillary (lithium heparin) gas tube, Green (lithium heparin, gel), Green (lithium heparin) on ICE, Green (sodium heparin, no gel))
Collection Instructions:Must be delivered to the laboratory within 2 hours of collection. Plasma samples are acceptable if processed within 2 hours of collection.

0 - 71 h Less than 40 or greater than 200 mg/dL
3 d - 5 mo Less than 51 or greater than 200 mg/dL
6 mo and older Less than 51 or greater than 500 mg/dL
   
Reference Range:

Fasting glucose is defined as no caloric intake for 8 hours. Casual glucose is defined as any time of day without regard to time since last meal. Casual glucose range is dependent upon food intake, intravenous fluids and parenteral nutrition.

A fasting glucose greater than 126 mg/dL or a casual plasma glucose greater than 200 mg/dL, if confirmed on a subsequent day, meets the threshold for the diagnosis of diabetes, and precludes the need for a glucose challenge.
