Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Do not process. Send sample and request form to the Acute Care Laboratory for processing.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:Give sample to Chemistry for special handling.
Chemistry: Centrifuge, remove supernatant for CEA and fluid amylase and dilute as appropriate. Leave button in collection container and add back 0.5 mL sterile saline. Order a NGNCT and send button in saline with request form to Cytology.
Cytology Laboratory: Create cytospin slides for low volume specimens. Always prepare a slide for pap stain and a second slide for Histology for Mucicarmine stain.
Room temperature - 8 hours; refrigerated - 48 hours; frozen - indefinitely.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Chemistry and Cytology  (UMMC-East Bank)

Reference Range:By report. The ADVIA Centaur CEA and Vista 1500 Amylase methods are used. Results obtained with different assay methods or kits cannot be used interchangeably.
Use:Malignant lesions can shed cells into a fluid in close proximity of the tumor. Isolating diagnostic cells from their supernatant aids in the detection or extent of a disease. Using the supernatant from a pancreatic cyst specimen preserves the supernatant, so it can be used at a later date for analysis of tumor markers, viscosity and enzymes.
