Critical Range:Positive
Reference Range:Negative for Enterovirus by PCR. FDA approved assay performed using Cepheid GeneXpert real-time PCR. This assay is a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for presumptive qualitative detection of enterovirus RNA in CSF of patients with signs and symptoms of meningitis or meningoencephalitis. It does not rule out other causes of meningitis, or other viruses. Enterovirus (EV) includes coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, polioviruses, and newer types designated as enteroviruses. This assay is designed to detect a consensus region of the EV genome 5' untranslated region (UTR) between nucleotides 452 and 596. Negative EV results do not exclude enterovirus as a cause of meningitis, but that enterovirus was not detected. Positive EV results do not exclude other causes of meningitis.
Use:When suspecting viral (aseptic) meningitis or meningoencephalitis in infants, children and adults. Peak seasons are summer and fall, but also off-season at times.
