Collection Instructions

Specimen:Urine, random or 24 hour collection.
Optimal Volume:8 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:1 mL
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile (3 L plastic jug)
Patient Preparation:Diet, medication, and nutritional supplements may introduce interfering substances. Patients should be encouraged to discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, nonessential over-the-counter medications for 48 hours (upon  the advice of their physician). In addition, the administration of iodine-based contrast media and drugs containing iodine may yield elevated results. Specimen must be collected in a plastic container and should be refrigerated after collection.
Causes for Rejection:Specimens not received in Trace-Element-Free tubes. Urine collected within 72 hours after administration of a gadolinium (Gd) or iodine (I) containing contrast media (may occur with MRI studies). Acid preserved urine. Specimens contaminated with blood or fecal material. Specimen transported in non-trace element-free transport tube (with the exception of the original device).


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Mix collection well before aliquot is taken. Aliquot 8 mL, 1 mL minimum into a metal-free container. Record the total volume and collection time interval on transport tube and on test request form.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:2 months at room temperature, refrigerated or frozen.

Reference Range:
Iodine, Urine, Random 16 years and older: 26.0-705.00 μg/L
Iodine, Urine, 24 Hour 16 years and older: 93.0-1125.0 μg/d
Random or 24 Hour Iodine Urine 0-15 y: Not established
Values greater than 100 μg/L May indicate dietary excess, but more frequently suggests recent drug or contrast media exposure
 
Use:Assessment of iodine nutritional status.
