Special Instructions:High concentrations of gadolinium are known to interfere with most metals tests. If gadolinium-containing contrast media has been administered, a specimen should not be collected for 96 hours.

Causes for Rejection:Grossly icteric.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Allow specimen to clot for 30 minutes. Centrifuge and aliquot 1 mL, 0.3 mL minimum into a metal-free container. Store in refrigerator.

Interpretive

Reference Range:40-92 ng/mL Values between 80 ng/mL and 250 ng/mL have been reported to indicate hyperthyroidism. Values >250 ng/mL may indicate iodine overload.
Use:The measurement of iodine serves as an index of adequate dietary iodine intake and iodine overload, particularly from iodine-containing drugs such as amiodarone.
