Collection Instructions

Specimen:Urine, 24 hour collection
Optimal Volume:Submit entire collection; analysis requires 3 mL.
Minimum\Peds Volume:3 mL
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile
Collection Instructions:Refrigerate during collection or adding 10 g of boric acid as preservative at start of collection. 24 hour volume is required.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Mix collection well before aliquot is taken. Aliquot 5 mL; 3 mL minimum.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.

Use:Cortisol, Urine, Free by LC-MS/MS (UCORTF) is the preferred test to rule out Cushing syndrome. Cortisol/Cortisone, Free Urine can assist in diagnosing acquired or inherited abnormalities of 11-beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase (cortisol to cortisone ratio).
This test has limited usefulness in the evaluation of adrenal insufficiency.
