Test Includes:Hepatitis B core antibody: if positive Hepatitis B surface antibody will be performed. If Hepatitis B surface antibody is negative, Hepatitis B core IgM antibody will be performed.
Turnaround Time:Performed Mon-Fri; negative results are reported the same day, positive results are reported within 3 days.

Optimal Volume:2 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.4 mL
Container:Red or gold (gel) (Blue Na Citrate, 3.2% - fill to fill line on tube, Green (lithium heparin, gel), Purple (EDTA), Red (no gel))
Collection Instructions:Serum is preferred. EDTA, heparinized or citrated plasma will be accepted. Serum is the only acceptable sample for neonates.
Causes for Rejection:Gross hemolysis, turbidity

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Within 2 hours of collection, centrifuge and leave sample in serum separator tube. If necessary, aliquot 0.4 mL, 0.1 mL minimum.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated or frozen temperature.
Stability:After separation from cells: Up to 7 days refrigerated. Freeze aliquot sample if stored for more than 7 days.

Reference Range:Non-reactive
Use:HBc antibodies can be used to monitor the progress of hepatitis B infection. It is present in serum shortly after the appearance of hepatitis B surface antigen and will persist for life.
