Collection Instructions

Specimen:Urine, random or timed collection
Optimal Volume:Submit entire collection; analysis requires 0.1 mL
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile (Plastic leakproof container, sterile)
Causes for Rejection:Frozen samples, samples greater than 24 hours old (room temperature or refrigerated).


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Mix collection well before aliquot is taken. Aliquot 1 mL, 0.1 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:Stability: 24 hours at room temperature or refrigerated.

Interpretive

Reference Range:Depends on patient's hydration status and renal function. Neonates: 75-300 mmol/kg; 2 years and older, random specimens: 100-1200 mmol/kg; greater than 850 mmol/kg after 12 hour fluid restriction; urine/serum osmolality ratio: 2 years and older: 1.0-3.0; 3.0-4.7 after 12 hour fluid restriction
Use:Aid in diagnosis of acute renal failure, hyponatremia, hypernatremia; renal function; support diagnosis of SIADH, diabetes insipidus.
