Interpretive

Reference Range:3-14 mmol/L; anion gap = Na - (Cl + CO2)
Use:Diagnosis of metabolic acidosis (marked elevation). Above 30 mmol/L, gap increase is commonly secondary to lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis. Unmeasured cations include K, Ca, Mg; unmeasured anions include protein, PO4, SO4, organic acids.
