Collection Instructions

Specimen:Bone marrow, whole blood, CSF, BAL, amniotic fluid, ocular fluid, tissue, urine or breast milk (with disclaimer)
Optimal Volume:2 mL blood or 1 mL non-blood specimen
Minimum\Peds Volume:1.2 mL blood, or 0.5 mL non-blood specimen
Container:Sterile tube (Container, Tissue, sterile, Purple (EDTA), Red or gold (gel), Plastic leakproof container, sterile)
Causes for Rejection:Heparinized specimens. Non-frozen tissue specimens.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:For serum or plasma, centrifuge and aliquot 1 mL; 0.5 mL minimum. Alternately aliquot 1 mL whole blood or non-blood specimen into a standard ARUP tube or sterile container. Store whole blood or bone marrow refrigerated, all others frozen. Tissue samples must be frozen immediately. Indicate source on all specimens.
Shipping Instructions:Ship whole blood or bone marrow refrigerated, all others frozen. For breast milk samples, document on ARUP packing list to run with a disclaimer.
Stability:Whole blood or bone marrow is stable for 1 week at room temperature, refrigerated or frozen. Tissue is stable for 3 months frozen. All other specimens are stable for 8 hours at room temperature; 72 hours refrigerated; 3 months frozen.
