Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:8 mL purple (EDTA) AND 12 mL Yellow (ACD) AND two peripheral blood smears, Wright stained or fixed in absolute methanol. A 4 mL purple (EDTA) normal control must be sent with the patient's sample. See collection instructions for additional information.
Minimum\Peds Volume:3 mL purple (EDTA) AND 5 mL Yellow (ACD) AND two peripheral blood smears, Wright stained or fixed in absolute methanol. A 4 mL purple (EDTA) normal control must be sent with the patient's sample. See collection instructions for additional information.
Collection Instructions:

Patient Sample:

1.     Immediately refrigerate specimens after draw.

2.     Send specimens in original tubes. Do not aliquot.

3.     Prepare smears.

4.     Rubber band the patient specimen and control vial together.

 

Control Sample:

1.     Draw a control specimens from a normal (healthy), unrelated, nonsmoking person at the same time as the patient.

2.     Label clearly on outermost label normal control.

3.     Immediately refrigerate specimen after draw.

4.     Send specimen in original tube. Do not aliquot.

5.     Rubber band the patient specimen and control vial together.

 

 

Causes for Rejection:Grossly hemolyzed samples. Samples sent without control sample or peripheral blood smears.

Specimen Processing:Do not process. Send specimens in original containers.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature to arrive at testing laboratory within 72 hours of collection.
