Special Instructions:Samples must be aliquoted into an amber ascorbic acid tube prior to shipping. Tubes are available at UMMC_East Referral/Sendouts, FSH, FNH, Lakes Medical Center, FRH and FRMC.


Collection Instructions

Specimen:Urine, random collection
Optimal Volume:8 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:2 mL
Patient Preparation:If this is an initial test for Pyrroles, discontinue taking any B6 or zinc one week prior to collection. If retesting, take supplements as usual.
Femal patients: DO NOT collect specimen during menstrual cycle.
Causes for Rejection:Ascorbic acid not used to maintain specimen stability. Room temperature or refrigerated specimens. Specimens not protected from light.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Aliquot urine into an amber ascorbic acid plastic tube. Do not transfer ascorbic acid to collection container. Fill with urine, no less than 1/2 full and no more than 3/4 full (approximately 2-8 mL). Mix and freeze immediately. Store frozen. Do not thaw. Protect from light.
Shipping Instructions:Ship overnight on dry ice.
