Urine Culture, Catheterized

Sunquest Code:URC
Epic Code:LAB239Epic Name:Urine Culture
Synonyms:URC
Methodology:Quantitative culture
CPT Code:87086, 87088, 87186 x8
Test Includes:Culture of aerobic flora from 100 to >100,000 organisms/mL and susceptibility testing. Gram stain if requested.
Turnaround Time:Performed daily; results are reported within 2 days.

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Urine, catheterized collection
Optimal Volume:5-10 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.2 mL (4.0 mL min if using vacutainer C&S)
Collection Instructions:

Refrigerate specimen if not delivered to laboratory within 30 minutes or collect in vacutainer urine C&S transport kit.

·          CATHETER COLLECTION: Clean catheter with alcohol sponge, puncture with sterile needle, and collect urine in sterile syringe. (Note: This technique is unsatisfactory for certain silicone catheters which may then leak).

·          SUPRAPUBIC TAP: Expose area above pubis. Scrub area with povidone iodine. Cover area with povidone iodine solution; allow to dry. Using sterile syringe and needle, aspirate urine from bladder, inject into sterile container. (If anaerobic culture is desired, expel air bubble and inject sample into anaerobic vial).

Contraindications:Bladder or urethral catheterization for culture may introduce infection, and has been generally replaced by clean catch technique when feasible. Do not collect urine from drainage bag of indwelling catheter, because bacterial growth can occur in bag. Catheter tips are contaminated by urethra as they are withdrawn and should not be cultured.
