Calcium, Ionized - Outreach Clients

Order Instructions:See Special Instructions
Synonyms:Ionized Calcium
Methodology:Ion selective electrode
CPT Code:82330
Turnaround Time:Performed and reported 24 hours/day.
Special Instructions:If the sample can be centrifuged within 1 hour of collection, order ICA (LAB54) plasma/serum. Order ICAW (LAB3077) for whole blood if the sample cannot be centrifuged within 1 hour of collection but will arrive at the testing laboratory within 4 hours. ICAW can only be ordered on a green top tube.

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:1 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.5 mL
Container:Green (lithium heparin) on ICE (Green (sodium heparin, no gel) on ICE, Red or Gold (gel) on ice)
Collection Instructions:

·          Do not remove stopper.

·          Place sample on ice and deliver to laboratory within 1 hour of collection for processing. Once processed serum or plasma samples are stable for 7 days refrigerated.

·          If the sample cannot be processed within 1 hour of collection, the whole blood ionized calcium test (ICAW) should be ordered. Whole blood samples cannot be collected in a red or gold (gel) container.

·          Whole blood samples must be on  ice within 30 minutes of collection, maintained anaerobically and analyzed within 4 hours. If specimen has been exposed to air, analyze within 1 hour if pH is 7.35-7.45; otherwise recollect.

Causes for Rejection:Sample exposed to air during collection or transport, specimen on ice not received within 1 hour of collection; whole blood samples not assayed within 4 hours of collection.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:

For serum or plasma, centrifuge with stopper in place within one hour of collection. Do not open the tube or split the sample. Store in refrigerator Whole blood specimens must be collected on ice, maintained anaerobically, and analyzed within 4 hours. Specimens that have been exposed to air should be analyzed within 1 hour if pH is 7.35-7.45.

Centrifuge, refrigerated specimen is acceptable for 7 days if stopper is not removed. Whole blood samples on ice are acceptable for 4 hours if the stopper is not removed.

Shipping Instructions:Ship unopened (anaerobically) at refrigerated temperature. Ship whole blood samples on ice.
