IDDL Stool Collection Container Guidelines

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Feces
Optimal Volume:3 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.5 mL
Collection Instructions:Feces: Collect in clean, dry bedpan or onto newspaper placed over toilet seat. Those portions of stool containing blood, pus or mucus are especially significant. Immediately place specimen in Cary-Blair transport media at 2-8 degrees C until transport to the lab, If specimen is collected in a sterile container, sample must be received in the lab within 2 hours of collection or placed into Cary Blair and refrigerated within 2 hours of collection. For low volume samples, a FecalSwab Cary-Blair transport may be used. Dip the provided swab into the stool and place in the transport tube. Bend and break the swab at the red line. Replace and tighten cap.
Causes for Rejection:Samples received in sterile containers greater than 2 hours from collection will be cancelled. Preserved stool not received at performing laboratory within 48 hours of collection will be cancelled.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:If received in sterile container, receiving laboratory must transfer sample to Cary-Blair/Fecal Swab transport media within 2 hours from collection. Store specimens at refrigerated temperature. Must arrive in performing laboratory within 48 hours.
Shipping Instructions:Ship specimens at refrigerated temperature. Must arrive within 48 hours.

Interpretive

Reference Range:Negative for Norovirus by PCR
Use:Verigene Enteric Pathogens Nucleic Acid Test (EP) is a multiplexed, qualitative test for simultaneous detection and ID of common pathogenic enteric bacteria, viruses and genetic virulence markers from stool (in Cary-Blair preservative medium). EP utilizes reverse transcription, PCR and array hybridization to detect Norovirus GI/GII.
