Hepatitis C Screen with Reflex to HCV RNA Quantitation and HCV Genotype

Sunquest Code:HCVSR
Epic Code:LAB6672Epic Name:Hepatitis C Screen Reflex to HCV RNA Quant and Genotype
Methodology:Chemiluminscent immunoassay; molecular
CPT Code:86803, 87522, 87902
Test Includes:Hepatitis C Antibody Screen with reflex to Hepatitis C RNA, Quantitation, Real-Time PCR (HCQNT) and Hepatitis C Virus High Resolution Genotyping (HEPCHI) if positive with greater than a log of 3.6.
Turnaround Time:Performed Mon-Fri; results are reported within 4 days for in house testing. An additional 8-10 days is required for specimens sent to reference lab for HCV genotyping

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:8 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:3.8 mL
Container:Red or gold (gel) (Purple (EDTA), Red (no gel))
Collection Instructions:Serum is preferred. EDTA plasma is also acceptable. Serum is the only acceptable sample for neonates.
Causes for Rejection:See individual test codes (HCVAB, HCQNT and HEPCHI). A green (lithium heparin, gel tube is unacceptable for screening.) For a reactive HCV antibody screen, the sample must be frozen within 72 hours of collection to run the Hepatitis C RNA, Quantitation and Hepatitis C Genotyping.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and leave sample in serum separator tube. If necessary, aliquot 4 mL, 1.8 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator up to 3 days. Freeze samples if transport time is greater than 3 days.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated or frozen temperature.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Specialty Core  (UMMC-East Bank)

Interpretive

Reference Range:Nonreactive. Assay performance characteristics have not been established for newborns, infants or children.
Use:Used for patients born between 1945-1965 following the CDC recommendations. Can also be used for any patient for which it is clinically recommended.
