Turnaround Time:Specimens are sent to reference laboratory Mon-Fri; results are reported within 7-14 days.
Special Instructions:Due to COVID-19, the Minnesota Department of Health is currently sending testing to the Centers for Disease Control.

Physicians should continue to contact the MDH to see if their patients qualify for testing. Call MDH 651-201-5414 and ask for Vector Borne Epidemiology to assess if testing is appropriate.

For diagnostic testing, a serum sample must be submitted in conjunction with urine or CSF samples. See Zika, Virus, Serum (ZIKAVS).

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Urine or CSF
Optimal Volume:5 mL urine or 1 mL CSF
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.5 mL (pediatric only). Does not permit repeat analysis.
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile (Sterile tube)
Causes for Rejection:Samples not submitted at the same time as a serum sample.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Do not centrifuge. Aliquot 5 mL urine or 1 mL CSF. Store in refrigerator
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:Send sample with concurrent serum sample. See Special Instructions.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Lab Sendouts  (CDC via Minnesota Deparment of Health)
