Aldosterone/Renin Activity Ratio Panel

  Epic Name:Aldosterone/Renin Activity Ratio Panel
Order Instructions:If the order is being placed in Sunquest, please order Aldosterone (ALDO), Renin Activity (RENIN), and Aldosterone/Renin Activity Ratio (ALDRR) all on the same accession number.
Synonyms:Aldosterone Renin Activity Ratio; RENIN; ALDRR; ALDO
Methodology:Chemiluminescent immunoassay/Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay
Test Includes:Renin Activity (RENIN) sent to ARUP, and Aldosterone Level (ALDO) and Aldosterone/Renin Ratio (ALDRR) done in Speciality Core.
Turnaround Time:
  • Renin Activity (RENIN) samples are sent to the reference laboratory Mon-Sat; results are reported within 1-5 days.
  • Aldosterone (ALDO) samples are performed Tuesdays and Fridays; results are reported the same day.
  • Aldosterone/Renin Activity Ratio (ALDRR) will be reported once the Renin Activity and Aldosterone samples are complete.
Special Instructions:Send both serum and plasma (EDTA).

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:2 mL in red or gold (gel) or red (no gel) and 4 mL purple (EDTA)
Minimum\Peds Volume:1.2 mL in red or gold (gel) or red (no gel) and 2.6 mL purple (EDTA).
Container:Purple (EDTA), Red or gold (gel) (Red (no gel) & purple (EDTA))
Collection Instructions:Collect both serum and plasma (EDTA). Do not collect in refrigerated tubes.
Patient Preparation:Collect mid-morning after patient has been sitting, standing or walking for at least 2 hours, and seated for 5-15 minutes.
Causes for Rejection:Plasma collected in citrate, heparin or oxalate. Hemolyzed specimens.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Within 2 hours of collection, centrifuge and aliquot 1 mL; 0.5 mL minimum serum and 2 mL; 1.2 mL minimum plasma. Store and ship at frozen temperature. Plasma is critical frozen and separate specimens must be submitted when additional tests are ordered.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at frozen temperature.
Stability:Serum: 8 hours at room temperature; 5 days refrigerated; 1 month frozen.
Plasma: 6 hours at room temperature; refrigerated is unacceptable; 1 month frozen.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Specialty Core (UMMC East) and Sendout (ARUP)
Referral Lab number:70105 (Renin)
