Bacterial ID by 16S RDNA Sequencing

Sunquest Code:16SBDN
Epic Code:LAB8018Epic Name:Bacterial 16S rDNA Sequencing
Synonyms:16S; Bacterial Sequencing; Bacterial 16S
Methodology:Sanger sequencing
Test Includes:Identification by sequencing of pure cultured bacterial isolates. Sample must be sent for culture prior to the Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Lab for 16S testing.
Turnaround Time:Performed Mon-Fri; results are reported within 3-5 days.
Compliance:

This test was developed and its performance determined by the University of Minnesota Medical Center Molecular Diagnostic and Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratories. It has not been cleared or approved by the U.S.Food and Drug Administration. The FDA has determined that such clearance or approval is not necessary. Pursuant to the requirements of CLIA '88, this laboratory has established and verified the test's accuracy and precision. This test is used for clinical purposes only.

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Cultured bacterial isolates, agar plates with bacterial isolates only acceptable.
Optimal Volume:2 mm2 section from a colony of pure cultured bacteria.
Minimum\Peds Volume:1 mm2 section from a colony of pure cultured bacteria.
Collection Instructions:Agar plates will be cultured prior to sequencing.
Causes for Rejection:Fresh specimens will be rejected; must be cultured prior to submission for sequencing. Culture must be a pure culture. Mixed cultures will be rejected.

Culture plate samples will only be accepted from outside facilities under the condition that the samples will be analyzed by the Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Lab (IDDL). The staff will verify that the sample submitted is a pure culture and testing will proceed. If the sample submitted is not pure, the sample will be rejected.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Do not process.
Shipping Instructions:Ship agar plates at room temperature to arrive ASAP.
Stability:Store agar plates at room temperature.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Molecular Diagnostics  (UMMC-East Bank)

Interpretive

Reference Range:Genus and species confidence will be reported.
Use:Identification of pure cultured bacterial isolates.
