Test Includes:Culture for Listeria monocytogenes.
Turnaround Time:Performed daily; results are reported within 3 days-4 weeks, depending on specimen source. Routine culture: 5 days.


Collection Instructions

Specimen:Only vaginal source (cold enrichment methodology). Stool cultures for special study only. Normal sterile sites such as blood, CSF or organ tissues should be ordered as routine culture.
Optimal Volume:3 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.3 mL
Container:Microbiology containers (Plastic leakproof container, sterile)
Collection Instructions:Refer to collection methods for routine culture.
Causes for Rejection:Sterile sites need to be ordered under routine culture. Stool is not acceptable for Listeria culture (unless it is part of a special study).


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Lab-Microbiology  (Isolates confirmed at MDH, UMMC-East Bank)


Interpretive

Reference Range:
No Listeria monocytogenes isolated.  
Use:Cold enrichment culture is useful for detection of Listeria in mixed flora sites.
