Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:1 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.6 mL
Container:Red or gold (gel) (Green (lithium heparin, gel), Green (sodium heparin, no gel), Purple (EDTA), Red (no gel))
Patient Preparation:A fasting specimen is preferred.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot 0.5 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator up to 48 hours; otherwise freeze.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature to arrive within 48 hours. Alternatively, ship on dry ice.

Interpretive

Reference Range:0-30 mg/dL
Use:Evaluate risk factor for macrovascular disease. Lp(a) greater than 30 mg/dL poses increased risk for cardiac disease.
