Specimen:Sputum, bronchial washings or bronchoalveolar lavage

Collection Instructions:


  • Sputum: Instruct patient as follows: Upon rising, rinse mouth with water and then expectorate a deep cough specimen into a sterile container. Seal container tightly.
  • Bronchial: Collect in a plastic leakproof container; do not use fixative.
Causes for Rejection:Fixed bronchial specimen; specimen collected in vacuum tube.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:A paper requisition must accompany the specimen and must include Hospital/Unit or Clinic name, responsible physician name and pager number, patient name and DOB, medical record number, date and time of collection, specimen source, and specific test(s) requested. (Non-GYN Cytopathology lab request form, SmartWorks #507884). Other paper request slips with cytology orders and printouts of electronic request slips from FCIS, EPIC and Atlas are acceptable.

Reference Range:Reported as negative to positive for hemosiderin-laden macrophages.
Use:Investigation of intrapulmonary hemorrhage, pulmonary siderosis due to passive congestion, idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis, or Goodpasture's syndrome.
