Test Includes:Culture for Beta hemolytic Streptococcus and routine aerobic flora. Also Haemophilus influenzae by specific request for UMMC, FRH, FSH. Should be ordered as cystic fibrosis culture in patients with cystic fibrosis.
Turnaround Time:Performed daily; results are reported within 3 days.

UMMC, FSH, FRH, FLMC, FNH: Use CoPan Eswab

FRMC: Use culturette in liquid Stuart medium

 

Collect one swab; collect second swab if also collecting rapid strep screen. Place each swab in culture container to ensure proper preservation of specimen. Collection technique for throat: Depress tongue and rub swab vigorously over each tonsillar area and posterior pharynx. Any exudate should be touched, and care should be taken to avoid tongue and uvula.

 

Contraindications:Bacteriological diagnosis of epiglottitis caused by H. influenzae is contraindicated since direct swabbing of epiglottis may precipitate acute respiratory obstruction and recovery of H. influenzae from this site may simply represent local contamination.

Interpretive

Reference Range:No growth, normal flora.
Use:Isolate and identify potentially pathogenic organisms from throat; evaluate pharyngitis.
