A separate order and collection should take place if stool calcium, chloride, magnesium, osmolality, potassium, sodium or any other microbiology testing is also desired. | ||

Collection Instructions: | Specimen may be refrigerated or frozen during collection. Do not fill the container more than half full (generally, two containers are required). |

For 3 days prior to and during the collection period:

Causes for Rejection: | Specimen containing barium, specimen is less than 5 gm. |
Contraindications: | Patient taking mineral oil. Barium interferes with test procedure; a waiting period of 48 hours before stool collection analysis is recommended. Patient taking fat blocking supplements or synthetic fat. |
Processing and Shipping
Specimen Processing: | 5 grams required for testing. Store in freezer. |
Shipping Instructions: | Ship on dry ice. |
Stability: | Comment the collection duration, do not order a collection or weigh the specimen. 24 hour collections are accepted. Approved containers are available upon request from Mayo Medical Laboratories. Send entire collection frozen to Mayo. Samples are stable for 180 days refrigerated or frozen. |

Use: | Total output of fat per 24 hours after a 3 day collection is a reliable test for steatorrhea. Test does not indicate the origin of the excessive fat excretion. Useful when qualitative fat test is borderline. |
