Turnaround Time:Performed Mon-Fri 0800-1600, same day RUSH processing when specimen received in lab by 12:00 (available only at UMMC). On weekends and holidays, contact the fellow/resident on call through the page operator at UMMC (Search: Surgical Pathology Primary On Call UMMC); other sites call the laboratory.
Special Instructions:Provide clinical information, including liver function and transplant history, on request form.

Collection Instructions:
Place specimen in fixative immediately upon removal from the patient.
  • 10% formalin
  • If electron microscopy is requested, place a second specimen in glutaraldehyde (2.5%) fixative available from the laboratory.
  • For special studies, e.g., enzyme histochemistry, immunochemistry, tissue culture or biochemical determination, contact the Pathologist On Call in Surgical Pathology to determine the appropriate technique and fixative for the procedure.
