Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:2.5 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.6 mL
Container:Red (no gel)
Collection Instructions:Specimen should be collected at least 8 -10 hours after the last dose and preferably at the same time of day for each patient. Do not draw in lithium heparin (green) tube.
Causes for Rejection:Samples drawn in gel tube. Hemolyzed and icteric specimens.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot within 4 hours of collection 1.25 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:1 day at room temperature; 7 days refrigerated; 6 months frozen.

Interpretive

Critical Range:Greater than 2.0 mmol/L. Levels higher than 1.5 mmol/L 12 hours after a dose indicate a significant risk of intoxication.
Therapeutic Range:0.6-1.2 mmol/L
Use:Monitoring lithium therapy.
