Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:2.5 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.6 mL
Container:Green (sodium heparin, no gel), St. Joseph - Red (no gel)
Alternate Containers: Red (no gel)
Collection Instructions:Specimen should be collected at least 8 -10 hours after the last dose and preferably at the same time of day for each patient. Do not draw in Lithium Heparin (green) tube.
Causes for Rejection:Samples drawn in gel tube. Hemolyzed and icteric specimens.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot within 2 hours of collection 1.25 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:Stability: Room temperature - 24 hours; refrigerated - 7 days; frozen - 6 months.

Interpretive

Critical Range:Grand Itasca/St Joseph: Greater than 1.5 mmol/L
All other sites: Greater than 2.0 mmol/L
Reference Range:Grand Itasca: 1.0-1.2 mmol/L
All other sites: 0.6-1.2 mmol/L
Limitations:Therapeutic: 0.60 - 1.20 mmol/L;
Potentially toxic: >1.50 mmol/L;
Severe toxicity: >2.50 mmol/L
Use:Monitoring lithium therapy.
