Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Aliquot 2 mL, 1 mL minimum into an ARUP transport tube. Store refrigerated.
Shipping Instructions:Ship refrigerated.
Stability:After separation from cells: 8 hours at room temperature; 1 week refrigerated; 3 months frozen.

Female, 3 y and older 0-5.1 pg/mL
Male, 3 y and older 0-7.5 pg/mL
Reference ranges for patients under 3 years of age is not provided by the reference laboratory.
Limitations:The Siemens Immulite 2000 method is used. Results obtained with different assay methods or kits cannot be used interchangeably. Calcitonin is useful in monitoring medullary thyroid carcinoma. The calcitonin assay value, regardless of level, should not be interpreted as absolute evidence of the presence or absence of malignant disease.
Diagnose and monitor medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Secondary test to assist in diagnosing multiple endocrine neoplasia type II and familial MTC.
