Special Instructions:Ensure an Informed Consent for Fetal Pathology Examination form is filled out with proper consent (as indicated on the form) and sent to pathology with the remains.  Consent form is form # 542499 in forms on demand.

Collection Instructions:Sterile techniques should be used; placenta should accompany all fetuses. For additional information, refer to intranet policies and procedures. Submit in sterile container or wrappings without fixative. When transport to lab is delayed, sterile saline may be used to avoid drying. Keep refrigerated.

Use:If possible, establish the mechanism of fetal loss and determine implications for future reproduction care of the postpartum patient. When applicable, confirm or reject antenatal diagnosis of birth defect.
