Fasting glucose is defined as no caloric intake for 8 hours. Casual glucose is defined as any time of day without regard to time since last meal. Casual glucose range is dependent upon food intake, intravenous fluids or parenteral nutrition. A fasting glucose greater than 126 mg/dL or a casual plasma glucose greater than 200 mg/dL if confirmed on a subsequent day, meets the threshold for the diagnosis of diabetes, and precludes the need for a glucose challenge.
Use:Monitor glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus.
