Collection Instructions
Specimen: | Bone marrow aspirate or trephine biopsy |
Optimal Volume: | 5 mL bone marrow aspirate or 1 cm trephine biopsy |
Minimum\Peds Volume: | 3 mL bone marrow aspirate or 1 cm trephine biopsy |
Container: | Dry heparin syringe Alternate Containers: Container, Tissue, sterile |
Collection Instructions: |
If aspiration is impossible, a trephine biopsy should be obtained. Collect 5 mL of sodium heparinized peripheral blood in addition to the bone marrow in all cases of newly diagnosed acute leukemia.

Causes for Rejection: | Clotted or frozen specimen. Incorrect specimen collection tube (anticoagulant). |
Processing and Shipping
Specimen Processing: | Store at room temperature. Do NOT refrigerate or freeze. Do not process.
Specimens must be received in the Cytogenetics Laboratory Mon-Fri by 5:30 pm. Weekends and holidays by 4:30 pm. specimens received after these cutoffs will be processed the following day. |
Shipping Instructions: | Ship at room temperature. |
Stability: |
For optimal testing results the specimen must arrive within 24 hours.
