Collection Instructions

Specimen:Bone marrow aspirate or trephine biopsy
Optimal Volume:5 mL bone marrow aspirate or 1 cm trephine biopsy
Minimum\Peds Volume:3 mL bone marrow aspirate or 1 cm trephine biopsy
Container:Dry heparin syringe
Alternate Containers: Container, Tissue, sterile
Collection Instructions:
If aspiration is impossible, a trephine biopsy should be obtained. Collect 5 mL of sodium heparinized peripheral blood in addition to the bone marrow in all cases of newly diagnosed acute leukemia.
  • Bone marrow aspirate: Collect in sterile sodium heparin syringe.
  • Bone marrow biopsy: Collect in sterile specimen cup with tissue culture medium.
Causes for Rejection:Clotted or frozen specimen. Incorrect specimen collection tube (anticoagulant).

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Store at room temperature. Do NOT refrigerate or freeze. Do not process.
Specimens must be received in the Cytogenetics Laboratory Mon-Fri by 5:30 pm. Weekends and holidays by 4:30 pm.  specimens received after these cutoffs will be processed the following day.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at room temperature.
For optimal testing results the specimen must arrive within 24 hours.
