Collection Instructions

Specimen:Skin biopsy or Products of Conception (Chorionic Villi, fetal skin, placenta)
Optimal Volume:
  • Products of conception (POC): portion of placenta at least 1 cm3 containing 35-55 mg of Villi
  • Skin, cord or fetal tissue: 3-4 mm punch skin biopsy. If obtained at autopsy: at least 1 cm^3, including dermis
Minimum\Peds Volume:Products of conception (POC): 5-10 mg chorionic villi
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile
Collection Instructions:Collect in plastic leakproof sterile container containing RPMI media. Sterile saline may be used if RPMI is not available.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Do not process. Store at room temperature or overnight in refrigerator at 4 degrees C. Do not freeze.
Specimens should be routed to the Pathology laboratory prior to Cytogenetics. Pathology will send sample to Cytogenetics.
Specimens must be received in the Cytogenetics laboratory Mon-Fri by 5:30 pm; weekends or holidays by 4:30 pm. Specimens received after these cutoffs will be processed the following day.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at room temperature.
For optimal testing results the specimen must arrive within 24 hours.
