  • Ordering physician or genetic counselor, and contact numbers
  • Reason for referral
  • Clinical status
  • Gestational age
  • Information regarding medications or transfusions
  • Previous or pending genetic testing results


Collection Instructions

Specimen:Skin biopsy or Products of Conception (Chorionic Villi, fetal skin, placenta)
Optimal Volume:
  • Products of Conception (POC): portion of placenta at least 1 cm3 containing 35-55 mg of Villi
  • Skin, cord or fetal tissue: 3-4 mm punch skin biopsy. If obtained at autopsy, at least 1 cm3, including dermis.
Minimum\Peds Volume:
  • Products of Conception (POC): 5-10 mg of Villi
  • Skin biopsy: 3-4 mm punch biopsy
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile
Collection Instructions:Collect in plastic leakproof sterile container containing RPMI media. Sterile saline may be used if RPMI is not available.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Store at room temperature. Do NOT refrigerate or freeze.
Specimens must be received in the Cytogenetics Laboratory Mon-Fri by 5:30 pm; weekends and holidays by 4:30 pm. Specimens received after the cutoffs will be processed the following day.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at room temperature.
Stability:
For optimal testing results the specimen must arrive within 24 hours.
