Collection Instructions

Specimen:CSF or ventricular fluid
Optimal Volume:4-6 mL preferred
Minimum\Peds Volume:1 mL
Container:Sterile tube
Collection Instructions:Submit tube for cytologic examination. Submit a specimen obtained before a diagnostic procedure such as pneumoencephalogram is performed. Reactive cells due to such procedures compromise cellular evaluation.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Store at room temperature. Store refrigerated if shipping is delayed.
Shipping Instructions:Ship same day at room temperature to arrive ASAP.
Stability:Fresh unfixed fluid: 24 hours at room temperature; 72 hours refrigerated; frozen is unacceptable.

Reference Range:Results reported as negative to positive for malignant cells.
Use:Establish the presence of primary or metastatic neoplasm; aid in the diagnosis of fungal meningitis, particularly Cryptococcus.
