Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Aliquot 1 mL, 0.8 mL minimum, serum or plasma. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:After separation from cells: 1 week at room temperature or refrigerated; 1 month frozen.

Interpretive

Reference Range:
Phenobarbital 0-2 months: 15-30 μg/mL; Toxic: >40 μg/mL
3 months & oder: 15-40 μg/mL; Toxic: >50 μg/mL
Primidone
(Mysoline)
5-12 μg/mL; Primidone concentrations >15 μg/mL in
conjunction with therapeutic levels of phenobarbital 
may be associated with toxicity.
 
Use:Optimize drug therapy and monitor patient adherence; the active metabolite of primidone is phenobarbital.
