Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:2.5 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.6 mL
Container:Red (no gel), St Johns/Woodwinds-Green (lithium heparin, no gel)
Alternate Containers: Purple (EDTA), St Johns/Woodwinds - Red (no gel)
Collection Instructions:Usual sampling time is 1-3 hours after an oral dose. Peak serum levels are attained in 20-30 minutes.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot 1.25 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:2 weeks refrigerated; do not repeatedly freeze/thaw.

Interpretive

Critical Range:Vista and Roche: > 30 mg/dL
Toxic: Serum concentrations exceeding 600 μg/mL are usually lethal.
Grand Itasca: >50 mg/dL
Therapeutic Range:Roche: 3-10 mg/dL; anti-inflammatory: 15-30 mg/dL.
Vista: Less than 20 mg/dL; anti-inflammatory: 15-30 mg/dL
Grand Itasca: 15-30 mg/dL
St. Johns/Woodwinds: 2-25 mg/dL
Use:Evaluate suspected salicylate toxicity.
