Collection Instructions:Trough level is preferred; collect immediately prior to next dose. Collect peak level 30-60 minutes after a single dose of syrup; 2-8 hours after capsules or tablets.
Causes for Rejection:Results may be altered if collected in gel tube.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot within 2 hours of collection 1.25 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator up to 8 hours. Alternatively, freeze.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature to arrive within 8 hours. Alternatively, ship on dry ice.
Stability:Stability: Room temperature - 2 hours; refrigerated - 8 hours; frozen - 2 months.

Interpretive

Critical Range:Greater than 150 mg/L
SJO/SJN: Greater than 200 ug/mL
Therapeutic Range:50-100 mg/L; epilepsy and mania patients: 50-125 mg/L; some patients require and can tolerate values up to 150 mg/L.
SJO/SJN: 50-150 ug/mL; Recommended therapeutic trough concentration range when used for manic episodes asociated with bipolar disorder: 50-125 ug/mL.
Use:Half-life: <2 months: 6.5 hours; children: 6-15 hours; adults: 8-15 hours
