Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:2.5 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.6 mL
Collection Instructions:Chemistry Tests Containers Chart
Trough level is preferred; collect immediately prior to next dose. Collect peak level 30-60 minutes after a single dose of syrup; 2-8 hours after capsules or tablets.
Causes for Rejection:Results may be altered if collected in gel tube.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot within 2 hours of collection 1.25 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:Roche: 2 days at room temperature; 7 days refrigerated; 3 months frozen.
Vista: 2 hours at room temperature; 8 hours refrigerated; 2 months frozen.

Interpretive

Critical Range:All Others: Greater than 150 mg/L
Therapeutic Range:50-100 mg/L; epilepsy and mania patients: 50-125 mg/L; some patients require and can tolerate values up to 150 mg/L.
Use:Half-life: <2 months: 6.5 hours; children: 6-15 hours; adults: 8-15 hours
