Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood and CSF
Optimal Volume:1.5 mL CSF and 2 mL blood
Minimum\Peds Volume:1 mL CSF and 1.4 mL blood
Container:Sterile tube, Red or gold (gel)
Alternate Containers: Red (no gel)
Collection Instructions:Collect CSF specimens in a sterile container, collect blood specmen in a red/black (gel) tube within 48 hours of CSF collection. Blood specimen must accompany CSF.
Causes for Rejection:Grossly bloody or hemolyzed specimens, or severe lipemia.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Send serum (collected within 48 hours of CSF) with the CSF specmen. Centrifuge at room temperature.
CSF: Aliquot 1.5 mL, 1 mL minimum.
Serum: Aliquot 1 mL; 0.6 mL minimum.
Shipping Instructions:Ship on dry ice.
Stability:2 weeks refrigerated; 6 months frozen.

A patient is considered positive for CSF oligoclonal bands if here are two or more bands in the CSF immunoglobulin region that are not present in the serum.
Use:Diagnosis of diseases of the central nervous system including meningitis, tumor, syphilis, and multiple sclerosis.
